Garín wants to be the first Chilean in the round of 16 at Indian Wells since 2009

Cristian Garín (18th in the world) will collide with Alex de Miñaur (27th) this Tuesday and, if he wins, he will become the first Chilean to reach the fourth round of the Indian Wells Masters 1000 since Fernando González did 12 years ago. The record between Garín and de Miñaur is 1-0 in favor of the Australian, who prevailed in the second round of the 2019 US Open in straight sets. As a rematch for that match and in his first participation in Indian Wells, Franco Davin’s former pupil will need the best of tennis to defeat the 22-year-old and match the instance González arrived at in the 2009 edition: The Queen’s Gunman (17th at the time) lost to Roger Federer (2nd) in the fourth round, but had previously eliminated Lleyton Hewitt (77th) and James Blake (13th).

In turn, it could be Garín’s first win against a Top 30 in concrete since his success against Stan Wawrinka (19th) in the first round of ATP Vienna in October 2020, when he beat him 6-4, 6- 7 (9), 6-3.
