Garbiñe Muguruza overthrows Ons Jabeur in the final in Chicago

The former world No. 1, Garbiñe Muguruza, is back in some great colors this season. After a delicate 2020, despite a final at the Australian Open, the Spaniard is once again dangerous and biting. In Chicago (WTA 500) on Sunday, the double Grand Slam winner played her fourth final in 2021 and won her second title there, after the one won last March in Dubai (WTA 1000).

In Illinois, Muguruza (9th in the world) dominated Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur (16th) in three sets and 1h44 of play (3-6, 6-3, 6-0). Well camped behind a first quality ball, Jabeur had yet taken the lead, even breaking at the start of the second set, then again at 2-2. But Muguruza did not panic, broke each time in stride.

More solid on the return games, the Spaniard logically returned to a set everywhere, before inflicting a white set on the Tunisian in the decisive round. Thanks to the ninth title of his career, Muguruza will climb to sixth in the world on Monday, while Jabeur will grab two places (14th) to join the Top 15 for the first time in his career.
