After four trophies in a row, Manchester City ended up yielding in the League Cup, being beaten on penalties by West Ham, in the round of 16 on Wednesday (0-0, 5-3 tab) at the Olympic Stadium in London.

With 65% possession of the ball and 25 shots, including 7 on target against 7 and 2 respectively for their opponent, Manchester City can blame themselves.

We have to go back 5 years and one day, October 26, 2016 to find a beaten City at the same stage of the competition. It was then at Old Trafford, against Manchester United of José Mourinho (1-0).

West Ham will be seen as a scarecrow in the quarter-finals, which will be drawn on Saturday and meet on December 21-22.

In the previous round, the men of David Moyes, 4th in the Premier League, had already gone to seek their qualification at Old Trafford, against Manchester United (1-0).

Other matches without surprises

After qualifying for Chelsea and Arsenal on Tuesday, as well as Petit Poucet of the competition, Sunderland (D3), Wednesday’s other matches did not come as a surprise.

Liverpool, who have never shown much enthusiasm for this competition, once again sent a B team without Alisson, Trent Alexander Arnold, Andy Robertson, Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mané, Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino or Diogo Jota, in Preston North End, modest 19th (out of 24) in the Championship (D2).

If they came close to the correctional in the first period, with an incredible save from Adrian, followed by a save on the line from Neco Williams in the 28th, the Reds found the flaw in the second act by Takumi Minamino (1- 0, 62nd) and a superb pigeon-reflex wing from Divok Origi (2-0, 84th) to avoid the unpredictable shots on goal.

In the other meetings, Tottenham ensured the bare minimum by going to win at the 19th of the Premier League, Burnley, thanks to Lucas Moura (1-0, 68th), while Brentford went to win (2-1) at Stoke City, Championship team.

Leicester had to wait for the shots on goal from a catchy Brighton, who came back twice to finally lose (2-2, 4-2, at the tabs).
