Finanznachrichten Martin Thaler: Insurance fraud: charges against 18 NBA players

Every basketball player dreams of playing in the NBA, arguably the best basketball league in the world. The players are then not only guaranteed worldwide attention. They also receive salaries that are comfortable to live on. An example: According to the “Statista” portal, a professional from the “Portland Trail Blazers” earned an average of 10.04 million US dollars in the 2019/2020 season – mind you.

The German basketball star Dennis Schröder is said to have recently come to $ 17.5 million at the Los Angeles Lakers – but he is nowhere near the top position.

However, some professionals seem to have higher financial needs. As reported by the US news channel CNN, 18 former NBA stars are said to have systematically duped their health insurances and collected a total of two and a half million dollars for services that were never performed. A corresponding charge was brought last Thursday, 16 suspects have been arrested by the American federal police, reported CNN.

Dental treatments that have not taken place will be billed

Specifically, it is about billing for dental treatments that have not taken place. The former NBA players tried to get between $ 65,000 and $ 420,000 from their health insurance company.

However, the accused apparently did not take particularly great care in their fraud – for example, at the time when the alleged treatment took place, some players were demonstrably abroad and far from the specified dental practice. For example, a player submitted an invoice for eight teeth crowning for $ 48,000. The treatment is said to have taken place at a dentist in Beverly Hills. Unfavorable: The man had played basketball for his current team in Taiwan that day. Other players had billed treatments on the same teeth twice.

Instead of high transfers, the accused athletes are now facing charges of fraud.
