The municipal sports centers Francisco Fernández Ochoa de Carabanchel and Marqués de Samaranch de Arganzuela host from December 4 to 12 the European Wheelchair Basketball Championship Madrid 2021. The women’s team participates in the only group formed by Great Britain, Germany, Countries The Netherlands, France and Turkey; and the men’s is in Group A with Lithuania, Switzerland, France, Poland and Germany.
The women’s team has achieved two fourth places in its trajectory in 2007 and 2019. In this edition, the favorite is the current world champion Netherlands, European champion and the Tokyo Paralympic Games, who has seven continental titles , three less than another of the favorites, Germany.
The men’s, runner-up in Europe in 1995 and 2019, first faces France, winner of seven continental titles, the last in 2002. In Group B are Great Britain, also with seven titles, current European and world champions in 2019 and bronze medalist in the last Paralympic Games in Tokyo, Austria, Israel, the Netherlands, Italy and Turkey.
The championship that is held in Madrid is a qualifier for the Dubai World Cup in 2022, the first five men’s teams and the four women’s teams pass directly. The teams will use the Moratalaz Municipal Sports Center as a training ground.
The European Wheelchair Basketball Federation is organized by the Spanish Federation of Sports for People with Physical Disabilities (FEDDF) and has the collaboration of the International Wheelchair Basketball Federation (IWBF), the Higher Sports Council, the Madrid City Council, the Community of Madrid, Caixabank, Endesa, Fundación ONCE, Plus Ultra Seguros, the Municipal Transport Company (EMT) and the Madrid Federation of Sports for People with Physical Disabilities (FMDDF).
