Eintracht Frankfurt mourns the loss of Bernd Nickel: “Dr. Hammer “was only 72 – Bundesliga

Eintracht mourns the loss of one of their greatest stars. Bernd Nickel, UEFA Cup winner (1980) and cup winner (1974, 75 and 81), died after a long illness at the age of 72.

As “Dr. Hammer “wrote Nickel football history. His dreaded spin shots and volleyball were untenable.

Nickel scored 141 times in 426 Bundesliga games. Only world champion Bernd Hölzenbein (75/160 hits) was more successful at Eintracht.

With world champion Jürgen “Grabi” Grabowski (77) and Holz, Nickel formed the most dangerous trio of all time in Frankfurt.

Record player Charly Körbel (66, 602 games): “I’m shocked. I moved into his room at Eintracht when I was 17. Bernd wasn’t loud, but he had a huge heart for the boys. “
