Twenty-five-year-old Medvedev, after a problem-free gain of the first set, was already leading 4: 1 in the second and it looked like a smooth progress. But then the winner of this year’s US Open lost four times in a row and Dimitrov stepped behind the turn.

“I don’t remember the last time I lost my serve on a hard surface three times, let alone four times in a row,” Medvedev said. “There is a slower surface here and in combination with the conditions it was like clay, which I don’t like. But losing a serve four times in a row is inexcusable,” he added.

“Step by step, I tried to return to the match and I fought for every point. I had to put everything into it,” Dimitrov added. “I really wanted to play against him, because when you see what he did this year, it motivates you to play your best,” he said.

The 30-year-old Bulgarian took care of another surprise in Indian Wells, where after the soon elimination of Karolína Plíšková’s world number three, both deployed ones were dropped out. In addition, the polka Iga Šwiateková also finished in the women’s singles.

In the quarterfinals, Dimitrov will play Hubert Hurkacz from Poland. “If he plays like he did against me from 1: 4 in the second set, he will win the whole tournament here,” Medvedev said.
