Derby van Rotterdam still gets a winner: Dessers saves Feyenoord in injury time

For a long time, the city derby between Sparta and Feyenoord seemed to end in a goalless draw, but Cyriel Dessers had other plans. The Belgian substitute gave the visitors from South Rotterdam the three points in injury time: 0-1.

Feyenoord and Sparta started expectantly at Het Kasteel and that turned out to be the prelude to a poor match, in which both teams never managed to shake off the hesitation. Tellingly, after half an hour not even a single shot had been fired on target.

Bryan Smeets fired the first shot at goal, but the ball was easy prey for goalkeeper Justin Bijlow. On the other hand, Feyenoord had opportunities through Alireza Jahanbakhsh, but the Iranian, who returned to the starting eleven at the expense of Fredrik Aursnes, found Sparta keeper Maduka Okoye twice in his way.

After the break, Feyenoord initially only got one big chance: Bryan Linssen, however, killed it. Again Okoye was the obstacle. After more than an hour of play, Linssen and Bryan Linssen were taken to the side by trainer Arne Slot. Dessers came before Linssen.

It didn’t seem like much of a deal and Sparta was even closest to a goal with a nice shot from Sven Mijnans. In the 92nd minute there was a winner: Dessers shot Feyenoord to the three points against Sparta, which is now in real relegation worries.
