Screams of pain cloud Hamburg’s victory in the crime thriller

The DFB Cup evening is not for the faint of heart. All three games go into extra time, Freiburg and Osnabrück get annoyed late and have to go to penalties. Mainz turns the game against Bielefeld, at Nuremberg and Hamburg screams of pain overshadow the tension.

VfL Osnabrück – SC Freiburg 2: 3 iE (2: 2, 1: 1, 0: 1)

It was not until the penalty shoot-out that the Bundesliga sky strikers of SC Freiburg continued their winning streak in the DFB Cup. Coach Christian Streich’s team won the third division VfL Osnabrück unexpectedly with difficulty 3-2 in the duels from the point and reached the round of 16 in detention. After extra time it was 2: 2 (1: 1, 1: 0). SC goalkeeper Benjamin Uphoff saved three penalties. Keven Schlotterbeck (120th) saved Freiburg in the penalty duel shortly before the end of extra time. Sebastian Klaas had previously brought VfL close to victory with his goal in the 108th minute of the game.

The Lower Saxony had forced the equalizer with the last action of the regular time with a hit by Lukas Gugganig (90 + 7). The goal scorer for the guests was Vincenzo Grifo, who took advantage of a mistake by goalkeeper Philipp Kühn in the 33rd minute. Osnabrück’s Ba-Muaka Simakala (116th) saw yellow-red shortly before the end of the hectic extension.

From the first minute, the Bundesliga third showed the more pleasing game system, but the necessary speed was initially lacking. In front of 11,530 spectators at the Bremer Brücke, the relegated second division always found enough time to orientate himself backwards in good time. The slow build-up of the game didn’t suit Streich at all. Again and again, the Freiburg coach urged his protégés to increase the number of strokes with clear gestures. The Lower Saxony, on the other hand, tried to compensate for the technical superiority of the Breisgauer, who were still unbeaten in the league, through a calm passing game.

On the offensive, the third division fourth, who was thrown out of the competition in the first round of Bundesliga relegated Werder Bremen, hardly took place until the break. With one exception: In the 36th minute, VfL striker Marc Heider failed from close range to Uphoff. After the break, little changed in the dominance of the Black Forests, who won 2-0 in the Bundesliga against Champions League participants VfL Wolfsburg only three days ago. The North Germans barely had possession of the ball and rarely counterattacks.

But after just under an hour, something else turned up. Now the hosts increased the pressure, but were more susceptible to counterattacks. Lukas Kübler (61.) just barely missed a second goal for Freiburg in regular time after switching quickly. Then it got dramatic.

1. FC Nürnberg – Hamburger SV 2: 4 iE (1: 1, 0: 1)

Second division Hamburger SV has reached the round of 16 after a penalty crime thriller. In the second-round duel between the old masters at league rivals 1. FC Nürnberg, the Hanseatics prevailed 4: 2 on penalties after the match after regular playing time and extra time had stood 1: 1 (1: 1, 1: 0). The hosts went after misses by Lino Tempelmann and Asgar Sörensen for the first time after a competitive game in the current season as a loser. Jonas David converted Hamburg’s decisive penalty. David had already brought HSV into the lead (45th). Joker Taylan Duman (59th) forced extra time eight minutes after being substituted on by equalizing.

The prestigious duel between the two Bundesliga contenders at Nuremberg’s Max-Morlock-Stadion barely met expectations for long stretches after the two teams went 2-2 in the Hamburg league. The “club” initially acted with too little speed and could hardly embarrass HSV. After all, the North Germans were clearly trying to get offensive. Up to David’s opening goal with a header after a corner kick, however, two long-range shots were the only noteworthy approaches of the guests.

Long-time club left-back Tim Leibold experienced a bitter return. The 27-year-old was whistled for every action and injured his right knee after a duel on the sidelines with Tom Krauss. Leibold had to be treated for a long time and was brought into the stadium interior on a stretcher in the 22nd minute with his hands clapped in front of his face.

After the break, the encounter began with a moment of shock. A few seconds after the restart, Krauss and his Hamburg opponent Miro Muheim clashed with their heads in an aerial duel. Krauss seemed at least temporarily unconscious and had to be taken from the place on a stretcher. When the exchange became necessary, FCN coach Robert Klauß proved a lucky hand with Duman’s substitution. Just eight minutes later, the 24-year-old tied for a draw with a direct pick-up.

Towards the end of the regular season, the hoped-for exchange of blows developed, without a team initially succeeding in the lucky punch. In extra time, the hosts put more and more pressure on and embarrassed Hamburg several times, but could not use their superiority for the decisive goal.

1. FSV Mainz 05 – Arminia Bielefeld 3: 2 (2: 2, 0: 1)

FSV Mainz 05 has worsened Arminia Bielefeld’s misery with its first round of 16 in four years. In a wild duel between the Bundesliga clubs with numerous chances to score, the team of coach Bo Svensson prevailed 3: 2 (2: 2, 0: 1) after extra time against East Westphalia, who have now been without a win for ten competitive games. On Saturday, however, Bielefeld will have the chance to take revenge in the league “second leg” on the Alm.

After falling behind by Masaya Okugawa (2nd), Mainz turned the game around with goals from Jonathan Burkardt (53rd) and Karim Onisiwo (59th). Fabian Klos (89th) equalized for the guests, but the substitute Marcus Ingvartsen (114th) extended the lean period for Bielefeld, who have not won the nine Bundesliga games since the first round of the cup at the beginning of August.

Burkardt missed the huge opportunity to take the lead after 61 seconds. After the next corner, the Arminia switched over at lightning speed and Okugawa shocked the hosts with a casual boom. The 05er had more play, but the guests remained extremely dangerous with their single-minded counter game and almost increased through Okugawa (28th) and Bryan Lasme (35th).

Except for a header chance by Burkardt (36th), Arminia had the running, but often too imprecise Mainz under control. Immediately after the break, things went up again: First Lasme (47th) scarred the second Arminen goal, two minutes later a free kick from 05er Aaron Martin just missed the goal – Burkardt did better with his head from close range.

After the equalizer, it got really wild, big scoring chances arose almost every minute. First the two goalkeepers Robin Zentner (56th) and Stefan Ortega (57th) saved the game, but Arminen keeper Ortega was powerless against the free-standing Onisiwo. The game then kept its enormous pace because the guests ran up and Mainz repeatedly countered dangerously. Joker Klos ensured the extension. But Mainz had the better end for itself.
