Carlos Alcaraz added his second victory against a Top 10. Come to Matteo Berrettini, number 7 in the world, in the quarterfinals of the ATP 500 in Vienna for 6-1, 6-7 and 7-6. The Spaniard gave a recital in the first set. He knew how to fight every point in the second, in which he almost broke serve in two games and was rebuilt in the third to score his 27th victory on the circuit (26 in 2021).

Alcaraz, at 18, had previously measured four Top 10s. He lost to Zverev (Acapulco), Nadal (Mutua Madrid Open) and Medvedev (Wimbledon). I beat Tsitsipas at the US Open. Came to the game against Berrettini after beating Andy Murray in the round of 16.

Alcaraz took command at the start of the match. After scoring his serve, he rested with intensity. I combine the forehand with the backhand to add the first break of the crash and get 2-0 up. Then, a good serve, with 40-30, allowed the Spaniard to remain in command and not give Berrettini a choice.

The murciano be in stellar plane. He punished his opponent’s backhand. They are not intimidated to subtract and go up to the network. Nor to play and reach two balls near the tape, cause the Italian’s mistake and score the second break (4-0). Alcaraz put the direct. Berrettini neither could nor knew how to stop the cyclone that had face to face (He only scored 9 of the 21 points he played with his serve). The Spaniard had, to the rest, of a ball to annotate the set in target. He could not materialize it. Then, when serving closed the sleeve: 6-1 in 29 minutes.

The start of the second set did not change the script. Alcaraz reread perfectly the way of attacking the Italian from the rest. It had two breakage situations. This time the Italian was able to solve them to, not without trouble, get ahead (1-0). Berrettini sang. The game is the same. Alcaraz did not wane: he attacked the net, looked for the backhand of his rival, sent two impossible balls to the line and paid tribute to his effectiveness with the service (he reached 86% of points won with the first one).

At 2-2, Alcaraz enjoyed two break options. The Italian suffered but finally took the longest game of the match. The Calvary of Berrettini to win each point with his serve countered with the sufficiency of the Murcian in the same situation. Not even going online worked for number 7 in the world. Another blank game by the Spaniard put the 3-3 on the scoreboard.

Chip change

Alcaraz knew how to change the chip to go from winning a set with some ease to fighting tat for each point. It was demonstrated in the eighth game. He got to be 0-30 down, the most committed moment of the meeting. With four good serves, the trance was over (4-4).

Berrettini’s improvement on serve (three aces in a row to get 6-5 up) led the sleeve to the tie-break. An unforced error by Alcaraz at the net, when he had the easy ball to settle the point, gave the first mini-break to the Italian (1-2). He did not miss that advantage. It was his moment and the set was scored to take the match to third.

The competitive maturity of Alcaraz was captured once more. The loss of the second sleeve did not affect him. The break was scored in the fourth game (3-1). The Vienna public applauded the Spaniard after seeing him run from one side of the court to the other, reaching impossible balls and finishing with a great right hand.

Berrettini, aware that until that moment he had been unable to break his rival’s serve throughout the game, grabbed the serve to continue with options. I look forward to your opportunity. He came in 4-2. Alcaraz gave him three break balls. A double fault consumed the break.

The Spaniard kept his composure. It did not shrink. Berrettini suffered to put the 4-4 with two balls on the line. Later, the Murcian broke his rival’s streak to raise the score to 5-4. Again, everything was put on hold until sudden death. This time it was Alcaraz who took advantage by breaking his rival (2-0). It was decisive. It allowed him to keep the rent with his serve to score a prestigious victory, reach the semifinals in Vienna and take another step in your career.

His rival in the match prior to the final will be the winner of the clash between Felix Auger-Aliassime and Alexander Zverev.
