BVB and Bayern do their duty, Wolfsburg straightens out after Van Bommel’s dismissal

Borussia Dortmund can work towards the home game with Ajax on Wednesday with three points in their bag. BVB booked a regular home win against 1. FC Köln on Saturday afternoon.

Borussia Dortmund-1. FC Cologne 2-0
The battered team of Marco Rose could again have goalkeeper Gregor Kobel and Donyell Malen at their disposal on Saturday, who did start on the bench. From there, he saw the game being broken open five minutes before time by Thorgan Hazard, who shouldered a measured cross from Jude Bellingham: 1-0. Malen came in for Hazard after an hour and entered the field together with Steffen Tigges. The same Tigges took care of the 2-0 final score not long after that double substitution. Dortmund has now won three games in a row since the beating against Ajax, which returns to the Westfalen Stadium on Wednesday.

Union Berlin-Bayern Munich 2-5
BVB remains one point behind leader Bayern Munich in the competition. Der Rekordmeister lost 5-0 in the cup midweeks to Borussia Mönchengladbach, but recovered against Union Berlin, Conference League opponent of Feyenoord. Robert Lewandowski had his eleventh and twelfth league goal within half an hour. Leroy Sané, Kingsley Coman and Thomas Müller also contributed to the five-hit wonder, which this time was in Bavaria’s favour. Niko Gießelmann and Julian Ryerson scored against on behalf of the home team.

Bayer Leverkusen-VfL Wolfsburg 0-2
VfL Wolfsburg had lost its last four competition matches under Mark van Bommel, but has picked up again after the resignation of the Limburger. Die Wölfe made the difference in the first five minutes after halftime on a visit to Bayer Leverkusen: Lukas Nmecha and Maximilian Arnold prevented Wolfsburg from sinking further in the Bundesliga, after the free fall of the past few weeks. In stoppage time, Maxence Lacroix was shown a red card for a foul in the box. However, the corresponding penalty by Lucas Alario was stopped by Koen Casteels.
