Cádiz, Oct 17 (EFE) .- The British Matthew Fitzpatrick won the Estrella Damm Andalucía Masters this Sunday with 6 strokes under par, a tournament on the European Golf Circuit that has been played since Thursday at the Real Club Valderrama (Cádiz), after a comeback in which he ousted his compatriot Laurie Canter from the lead, who collapsed on the last day.
Fitzpatrick has added 69 shots this last day and a card of 278 impacts between the four days of the tournament that made him overcome his opponents, including his compatriot Canter, who came as the leader to the last round and was forced to lower his head in a journey to forget.
Canter got off to a hopeful start to the road, but was soon gripped by two errors in a row that ultimately cost him the tournament. The birdie achieved on hole 5 was followed by two disastrous holes 6 and 7, in which a bogey and a double bogey left nothing behind the advantage with which the English had reached the final day.
Meanwhile, Fitzpatrick developed a lap from less to more, without errors, being the only player who this day did not commit a bogey.
In the first part of the round, the Swede Sebastian Soderberg presented his credentials for victory by taking the lead solo at the 11th hole with a birdie that put him at the top of the standings with six shots under par, after previously achieving two birdies and an eagle in the opening four holes, to catapult into the provisional classification.
However, Britain’s Fitzpatrick responded and began to carve out his triumph from the 15th hole. Until then, he had passed all the holes at par, closely following his opponents, but on that hole an extraordinary blow to get the ball out of the bunker and leaving it attached to the flag made him appear as a great candidate for the final triumph.
Two birdies in a row on holes 16 and 17, coupled with two bogeys from Canter and a double bogey from Soderberg, headed the way for Fitzpatrick’s victory, insurmountable and devastating.
Also noteworthy was the return of Australian Lee Minwoo, who held the guy calmly in the last holes knowing that the victory was far away, securing the second place shared with Soderberg.
In this edition there have been no Spaniards fighting for the top positions, as has happened in previous editions with two wins for Sergio García from Castellón (2017 and 2018) and the joint second place in 2019 for Jon Rahm, Álvaro Quirós, Eduardo de la Riva and Adrián Arnaus behind the winner, South African Christiaan Bezuidenhout.
The best classified Spaniard has been Pablo Larrazábal, in twentieth position, with +1 in the calculation of the four days of the tournament.
Paraguayan Fabrizio Zanotti asserted his consistency throughout the tournament, in which he was only above par on the field on the first day, to finish in the top ten.
