This is still Bayern’s biggest defeat in the Bundesliga. Striker Klaus Fischer disgraced the Munich celebrities Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge with four goals. “We were world champions, but we didn’t even play like caretakers,” scoffed goalkeeper Sepp Maier. Bayern then lose 5-0 to HSV and 6-1 to Saarbrücken. The championship is far away. “Only if everyone in Gladbach had pneumonia at once” would Bayern have a chance, “Kaiser” Beckenbauer said.

Sepp Maier, Gerd Müller and Katsche Schwarzenbeck have long since passed their zenith. The negative climax of a mixed season under Gyula Lorant and Pal Csernai was the 1: 7 at Fortuna Düsseldorf. Klaus Allofs and Wolfgang Seel with two hits each were unstoppable. FC Bayern has not lost any higher since then.

At that time there were still two legs in the cup. After the 3-0 win against 1. FC Köln in the home Olympic Stadium, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller and Co. thought they were in the semi-finals. But in Cologne the Munich stars experienced a rude awakening at 1: 5. In Wolfgang Sühnholz (broken tibia), Franz Krauthausen (jaw moved, two teeth knocked out) and Maier’s replacement Manfred Seifert (two broken ribs), three Bavarians have to go to hospital after an extremely tough game. By the way, the 1: 5 was up to the current 0: 5 in Gladbach the highest Munich cup failure. There was also a 1: 5 in the league in 2019: In Frankfurt, Jérôme Boateng flew off the pitch early – after the game, coach Niko Kovac had to leave.

Bayern dismissed coach Jupp Heynckes early in the season and successor Sören Lerby failed to get the team back on track. The result: At the completely unknown Danish club B 1903 Copenhagen, Munich experienced their highest European Cup bankruptcy. The embarrassing 2: 6 for the team around Stefan Effenberg meant the end despite a 1: 0 in the second leg in the second Uefa Cup round. Lerby did not stay in office until the end of the season.

“That was a huge embarrassment,” complained the then CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge after the quarter-final gossip at Camp Nou. The question of the consequences he evaded after the highest defeat in the premier class: “We shouldn’t make a decision tonight, but sleep over it for a night.” A short time later, coach Jürgen Klinsmann was dismissed. Bayern had only suffered a 0: 4 in the most important European competition in 1973 (at Ajax Amsterdam).

Bayern had huge expectations for the semi-finals against Real Madrid. Pep Guardiola had just come to Munich, the hottest coach in the world. But then they met Real Madrid in the premier class semi-finals, where Carlo Ancelotti knew exactly what the Catalan was up to. In the first leg, Real scored an early goal through Karim Benzema, the rest was an iron fight. “Real defended well, they played on the counterattack, we had a tough time,” said Manuel Neuer after the final whistle. He had no idea what would happen in the second leg: Again, the Spaniards were in attack mode, a breakwater like Javi Martinez was missing in the Bayern center – and it was 3-0 at halftime. Twice Sergio Ramos, once Ronaldo, that sat. In the end, Gareth Bale made it 4-0 and Bayern were done for.
