Berlin surprise candidate Bahar Haghanipour: “I wasn’t nominated, not to hide.” – Berlin

by archysport

Ms. Haghanipour, barely entered the Chamber of Deputies, you were nominated by your group as Vice-Speaker of Parliament. Honor and burden at the same time?
A mixture of both. I am delighted with the confidence that my group has placed in me. And I’ve thought carefully about the decision. The humility in front of the office, the expectations and the challenges associated with it prevail.

You are aggressively fighting for equality; as Vice-President you have to moderate objectively and impartially. A conflict?
Of course, I have to grow into this position and learn what it means in detail. Basically, I can easily separate roles in my head. I am looking forward to leading the parliament and combining the office – with all non-partisanship – with my specialist politics.

It is not always easy for women in the House of Representatives. Do you fear attacks?
It will be interesting to see how that plays out. But I trust the tools of the trade such as the rules of procedure. Maybe it’s nice when a woman like me is in the office and reacts in such cases. That’s what I’ve been nominated for, not to hide.

Immediately after their nomination, they complained that they lacked experience. What qualifies you for the post?
The fact that I am asked this question has a women’s political component – even if it is legitimate. My choice shows that a lot of people trust me to do that. I have also been working politically for many years. I feel like it and would like – with the tailwind of the group – to grow into the role.

Do you see yourself as a role model for others?
I am happy when I am seen as a role model for young, migrant-read women. The aspect of finding a kind of role model for these women with me was certainly not decisive for my candidacy and choice.

One of your goals is to pass a parity law. Why is it necessary?

Because it is just a part of changing structures in order to create gender equality. I will continue to make myself strong for this.
