Women in the CDU demand more participation – Winter: We have to become younger and more feminine
CDU politicians are pressing for greater participation of women in their party. “We basically have to become younger and more female,” demanded board member Wiebke Winter in the newspapers of the Funke media group. “Diversity means that you can make a policy that may appeal to even more people”she pointed out.
Winter criticized the fact that those currently being discussed as a possible successor to Armin Laschet as CDU chairman are all male and from North Rhine-Westphalia. She expressed the hope that “the field will become even more mixed”.
With regard to women, however, Winter admitted: “We cannot bake any candidates at the moment.” It is all the more important to build up women in order to “become structurally better”. The Bremen state chairwoman of the Junge Union rejected a quota. She advocated “political parental leave” to make it easier for young mothers to combine family and political activities. In addition, there must be more mentoring and networking opportunities for women.
Party Vice-President Julia Klöckner also admitted that women in the CDU are not visible enough across the board. “There is only one woman among all Union parliamentary group leaders in the federal states, and it does not look any better among the party leaders in the federal states.
