Bayern Munich loses EuroLeague drama at Maccabi Tel Aviv

The German runner-up Bayern Munich started the basketball EuroLeague season with a narrow defeat. The ambitious but currently weakened Bundesliga club lost 68:69 (32:40) after a dramatic final phase at Maccabi Tel Aviv. Alba Berlin is hoping for a better start. The champions will play at FC Barcelona on Friday (9 p.m.).

Without Vladimir Lucic and captain Nihad Djedovic, Bayern trailed behind early on in Tel Aviv. Overall, the quarter-finalists were missing six players last season, and yet Bayern turned up, took the lead in the third quarter and held it until shortly before the end. But they never got the outstanding Scottie Wilbekin (28 points) under control.

Already at the start of the Bundesliga, Munich had surprisingly lost against ratiopharm Ulm (83:86). At the Israeli champions they performed much more convincingly in front of 10,352 spectators, even if they weren’t enough to win.

After Bayern were the first German team to reach the play-offs of the European premier class last season and only narrowly failed to make it into the Final Four, the demands have grown. For the first time, the Munich team is a permanent member of the EuroLeague, with the A license they are shareholders in an exclusive club.

“That of course also gives us planning security,” said FCB President Herbert Hainer. He is “very confident that we will make it to the top in Europe”. The final tournament of the EuroLeague will take place in Berlin in May 2022, until then it will be a long way for Bayern, which will lead to FC Barcelona in the second game. The Catalans come to Munich on October 7th.
