Ballon d’Or: Lewandowski or Messi? The background to the vortex about leaks

Most recently, leaks appeared that are supposed to show the result of the Ballon d’Or 2021. But what is really behind it?

Will Robert Lewandowski win the Ballon d’Or – or is it Lionel Messi? Leaked lists of the alleged voting result have recently caused a stir. What’s behind it?

The one from the French sports newspaper France Football will take place in Paris on November 29th. But the alleged result of the vote by international journalists was already circulating on the Internet.

At the beginning of the week, a shaky photo of a list dated October 25 appeared on Twitter, which was topped by Bayern star Lewandowski at number one. The indicated number of 627 behind his name presumably stood for the votes he had achieved. Lionel Messi was in second place, but the picture did not show how many votes the Argentine should have won.

The origin of this note is unclear. In the past, such leaks of the supposed result in the run-up to the award, mostly fakes. In this case, too, there are doubts as to the truth of the list.

Lewandowski or Messi? Ballon d’Or leak

The same applies to a new leak, the GiveMeSport spread via Twitter. Citing “reports from France Football“Messi is said to have won the vote with 645 points ahead of Lewandowski with 431 points and Karim Benzema (483).

The problem: These reports from France Football did not exist. The French sports newspaper is unlikely to have any interest in the fact that the result of the election it has carried out is known a month before the ceremony.

PSG star Messi has won the Ballon d’Or six times, making it a record winner. Lewandowski is now given good chances of winning the Ballon d’Or after being honored as a world footballer by FIFA last year.
