Zverev, who went into the game with a 5-1 record against the American, set the first pinprick of the final with the break to 3-1. Tiafoe was unimpressed and countered with two game wins in a row.
It was an open duel in the Wiener Stadthalle, with slight advantages for Zverev.
The German acted more aggressively, hit more winners in the first set (17:11) and, thanks to the break, took the lead to 7: 5 after 46 minutes.
