CLUJ
The Romanian Simona Halep, local idol and first seed, lost in the final of the Transylvanian Tennis Open, this Sunday in Cluj, against Estonian Anett Kontaveit 6-2, 6-3.
Halep, a former world No. 1 who is currently ranked 18th, was clearly outmatched already in the first set, in which she won just 29% of points on her first serve.
In the second set, Halep couldn’t react and end up suffering his first loss to Konteveit, in four confrontations.
A week after her title in Moscow, Kontaveit (14th in the world) wins her fourth tournament of the year 2021 and thus signs her best season.
Thanks to Sunday’s victory, the Estonian tennis player also obtains the last qualifying place for the Masters women, which will be played in Guadalajara (Mexico) from November 8. In the new WTA ranking, released on Monday, she will make her entry into the ‘Top 10’.
The Cluj tournament is played on a fast track and distributes $ 235,000 in prizes.
