In the round of the last 16, the number four in the world rankings defeated Australian Alex de Minaur 6: 2, 3: 6, 6: 2 after a hard fight over 1:39 hours. “I’m happy to have achieved this so early in my career, but hopefully there will be a lot more,” said the 24-year-old about his 300th success.

This continued the series of Zverev, who had always reached at least the quarter-finals in his previous four tournament participations since his Olympic victory in Tokyo and even won in Cincinnati. Zverev got off to a good start and took off his service game from his opponent, who had recovered from a Covid 19 disease, right from the start. He managed another break in the fifth game, so the first set in 32 minutes was a clear matter for Zverev, who was number two in Vienna.

In the second section, Zverev was faced with far more resistance and had to give up a service game to score 3: 5 and thus give up the set. But thanks to a concentrated performance in the final sentence, Zverev deservedly prevailed. It was the fifth victory of Zverev against his Australian competitor in the sixth duel.

In the quarter-finals, the 24-year-old from Hamburg will now face Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, who won 2: 6, 7: 6 (8: 6), 6: 4 against Briton Cameron Norrie in the second round. At the start, Zverev defeated the Serb Filip Krajinovic 6: 2, 7: 5 at the event, which was endowed with 1.974 million euros.

Barthel is the last German to fail in Cluj-Napoca

The quarter-finals at the WTA tennis tournament in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, will take place without German participation. Mona Barthel failed in the second round 4-6, 4-6 against the Ukrainian Marta Kostjuk. The day before, Anna-Lena Friedsam from Andernach also failed in the same round because of a Ukrainian. She was defeated by Anhelina Kalinina 2: 6, 2: 6.
