The players are free this week, which means Collins won’t be back in practice until next week when the Cowboys (5-1) begin preparing for their game at Minnesota on Oct. 31.

“La’el has been here. He looks good, in exercises and so forth,” McCarthy said. “We’ll be excited for him to get back into the mix fully after the bye week.”

Collins signed a five-year, $ 50 million extension before the 2019 season, and has been the starting right tackle when healthy. He missed the entire 2020 season with a hip injury that required surgery, and had limited reps at the end of training camp due to a stinger in his neck.

Collins was able to start Week 1 against the Bucs. Then came the five-game suspension. Steele, a second-year veteran of Texas Tech, has taken over on the right side.

The Cowboys are the number one offense with 460.8 yards per game and 34.2 points per game. They are second in the running game, averaging 164.3 yards, and quarterback Dak Prescott is an MVP candidate with 16 touchdowns and four interceptions.

McCarthy was asked if it is obvious that Collins is returning as the starter.

“That’s really the time of the bye week. This is the kind of conversation we’re going to have,” McCarthy said. “We have a full list of self-assessment projects that we are going to do (Tuesday). We will do complete preparation for when the players return. … We will probably have a staff meeting (Tuesday) and have those kinds of conversations.” .

When asked to discuss the issue on 105.3 The Fan radio station, Jones said there is no “rule of thumb” for a headline to maintain their depth chart position after an absence, although this is usually how. the club works in most situations.

“But he’s an outstanding football player, recognized throughout the NFL, and whenever you can help, especially on your offensive line, you have to use him,” Jones said. “On the other hand, you couldn’t have worked out someone who knew how to take advantage of the situation and who has gotten better and better in front of your eyes like Steele has. So we have a great situation there.

“… That’s the way we normally do it, the incumbent usually gets his job back. Now that’s not a golden rule at all. But before we finish, I’d see to have you both out there at every match”.
