Ruslan Zakharov, a 23-year-old Russian speed skater, died in a tragic accident, reports the Russian Skating Association (KSA).
“As a result of the tragic accident, Ruslan Zakharov, a world junior champion medalist and world junior cup champion in speed skating, has died forever. He was 23 years old. The Russian Skating Association expresses its deepest condolences to Ruslan’s family, friends and relatives,” KSA said in a statement.
Foreign media report that the tragic accident occurred when the athlete had gone for an early morning run. Zakharov ran along the side of the road when he was hit by a truck driver driving in the same direction.
Zakharov is reported to have been taken to hospital immediately with very serious injuries, including a serious brain injury. Unfortunately, the doctors of the intensive care unit failed to save the young man’s life.
The Russian sports portal Sport-Express reports that the driver who hit Zakharov had not consumed alcohol or other intoxicants, but did not have a category C driver’s license required to drive a truck.
However, the Khabarovsk authorities point out that Zakharov himself also violated the rules, because he moved along the carriageway, despite the fact that there was a sidewalk nearby.
