Weakness of PSV exposed: “Then in fact he only has one creative player”

PSV relies mainly on the quick transition, says Wim Kieft. The analyst sees that PSV has difficulty creating opportunities when opponents close things down.

“If the spaces become smaller, if an opponent closes things down like Benfica and Sociedad did, then trainer Roger Schmidt in fact only has one creative player at his disposal: Mario Götze,” Kieft writes in his column in De Telegraaf. “Cody Gakpo and Noni Madueke are good players, but they need to be brought in by someone like Gotze. Davy Pröpper could do it too. He gets little playing time. Schmidt always chooses Marco van Ginkel, but that is neither meat nor fish. Or for Ryan Thomas as a substitute. Also someone who adds nothing.’

Schmidt’s substitution policy does not appeal to Kieft anyway, ‘Schmidt seems to be substitution for substitution, because no substitute was an improvement for PSV’, Kieft writes. ‘Madueke has been playing less in recent weeks, but his replacement Yorbe Vertessen is a powerhouse; he didn’t bring anything extra to Madueke.’

The analyst has also looked at Oussama Tannane with interest this week. ‘With him it remains to look at something great or at the hopeless nothingness. You don’t have any other tastes.’ Kieft states that the midfielder, together with Bazoer, are about the only ones you sit for when Vitesse plays. “Especially when they meet Stade Rennes and Tottenham Hotspur. Because otherwise there is little special going on at Vitesse’, according to the analyst.
