The US Open will take place in 2021 without defending champion Dominik Thiem, but with Olympic champion Alexander Zverev and all-time favorite Novak Djokovic. In the women’s singles, defending champion Naomi Osaka showed nerves and was eliminated in the third round.

Alexander Zverev’s game against Lloyd Harris will take place on Wednesday, September 8th. Zverev will likely have to play at Arthur Ashe Stadium at 1:30 p.m. local time as soon as the game between Belina Bencic and Emma Raducanu is over. Fans see the first rally at 7:30 p.m. Central European time.
Zverev had beaten his opponent 7: 6, 6: 2 on the way to his first Cincinnati title. But the South African, number 46 in the world, should not be underestimated. Harris won the first round of the US Open in a thrilling five-set match against the Olympic finalist Karen Khachanov and threw the service giant Reilly Opelka out of the tournament after a difficult start. He also managed a victory over Rafael Nadal at the preparatory tournament in Washington.

US Open 2021: Here’s how you can watch it live in New York
In hardly any other sport is the mental performance of the athletes as much in focus as in tennis. On the one hand, that has always been the case, because at least in individual cases, every professional has to be on the pitch alone. On the other hand, a debate is currently taking place, centered around US Open defending champion Naomi Osaka. The Japanese withdrew prematurely from the French Open this season because of her mental fitness, refrained from participating in Wimbledon and made no secret of the fact that her round of 16 at the Olympic Games also had to do with the particular pressure.
Around two weeks before the start of the US Open, she broke off her first press conference since the Tokyo Games in tears. Because the 24-year-old has already triumphed twice (2018, 2020) in Flushing Meadows and has the chance to defend her title, she will be competing this year. However, there is a question mark in advance of their chances of winning the title.
There is also a question mark behind the prospects of success for Germany’s number one woman, Angelique Kerber. In 2016 she won in New York and made her way to the top of the world rankings. In 2021 she will be number 17 in the New York Grand Slam and, thanks to reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals, she has reason to be cautiously optimistic.
Djokovic has the chance of a lifetime
The number one in the ATP world rankings has been Novak Djokovic for ten years, and so far he has won all Grand Slams in 2021. This gives him the chance of the first “real” Grand Slam in men’s tennis since Rod Laver in 1969. If the Serb won the title in New York, it would also be his 21st Grand Slam title – that would make him a lonely top in front of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, with whom he is currently tied.
The German gold Olympian Alexander Zverev wants to prevent this. Last year’s finalist knows that he can now play at eye level with the Djoker: “Novak is definitely the favorite, but the others travel to New York well prepared.” Because that does not include the reigning champion Dominik Thiem – the Austrian heals a complicated wrist injury – Zverev is one of the favorites.
If it comes to another duel between Zverev and Djokovic, the German can hopefully repeat his latest success: In the Olympic semifinals in Tokyo, Hamburg’s Djokovic defeated Djokovic for the third time in the ninth attempt, thus preventing the Serbian from winning the Golden Slam. Only Steffi Graf succeeded in this feat in 1988.
