the great fights of Manny Pacquiao

Manny Pacquiao, the Filipino boxing icon who announced Wednesday that he was definitely leaving the rings, delivered 72 fights, several of which have gone down in history.

De La Hoya destroyed
Opponent: Oscar De La Hoya, December 6, 2008 in Las Vegas
Pacquiao gained weight to move up to the top welterweight class and inflict a severe loss on Oscar De La Hoya. At lightning speed, he delivers violent blows to the famous American boxer who ends the fight with a swollen face. In the seventh round, he managed to gain the upper hand and in the eighth, De La Hoya signaled to the referee to give up the fight.

Hatton humiliated
Ricky Hatton, le 2 mai 2009, Las Vegas
The Briton rushes at Pacquiao as soon as the bell rings, falling into an ambush. In the first round of the fight, Hatton suffered two knockouts in a fight for the title of welterweight champion of the International Boxing Organization (IBO). At the end of the second round, a left hook from Pacquiao hit Hatton’s chin hard, sending him straight to the mat in what was arguably the most spectacular of the Filipino’s 39 knockout victories.

Cooked down
Miguel Cotto, November 14, 2009, Las Vegas
Pacquiao knocked Cotto down with a right hook in the third round and the great Puerto Rican would have found himself down in the fourth if the bell hadn’t sounded. In the ninth round of this world welterweight title fight, Cotto’s face is bloodied. The referee stops the bout at the start of the 12th round to prevent further injury to Cotto.

Broken Margarito
Antonio Margarito, November 13, 2010, Arlington, Texas
The American-born Mexican is completely wiped out by the Filipino during the 12 rounds of the fight for the World Boxing Council super welterweight title. At the end of the fight, his face covered with bruises and blood, Margarito will be transported to the hospital where he will be operated on for a fracture in his right orbital bone.

Magic Marquez
Juan Manuel Marquez, December 8, 2012, Las Vegas
The fourth and last fight with his great Mexican rival is violent, like Pacquiao’s final fall on the mat, face down, just before the end of the sixth round. Knocked down in the third round, Pacquiao was back in the fifth, smashing the Mexican’s nose and knocking him down in what was arguably the best round of the Filipino’s career. But Marquez, bloodied, will have had the upper hand thanks to this punch in the sixth round, to make Pacquiao suffer his second defeat in a row.

Mayweather, the “fight of the century”
Floyd Mayweather, 2 mai 2015, Las Vegas

More than 500 million dollars in revenue (including 180 million for the American and 120 for Pacquiao), says all about the dimension of this confrontation, presented by its promoters as the “fight of the century”. In the ring, however, the show will be less rich than hoped. Mayweather will win on points, unanimously. And Pacquiao will indicate after the fact that he suffered from the resurgence of an old right shoulder injury from the 3rd round, to justify his lack of enthusiasm.
