The city of Olbia will host the 2021 World Junior Judo Championship from 6 to 10 October next

The city of Olbia will host the 2021 World Junior Judo Championship from 6 to 10 October. The event will take place inside the Geopalace, the sports hall of the Geovillage Resort & Conference Center, whose facilities are managed by Olbia Calcio, ancient football association that aims at the development of multidisciplinary sport.

The Junior Judo World Championship, wanted by FIJLKAM, Italian Federation of Judo Fight Karate Martial Arts and IJF, International Judo Federation, with the patronage of the Sardinia Region and the Municipality of Olbia is the first world youth event that takes place after the recent Tokyo Olympics .

«Judo has always been a sport of great importance for our city – declared the mayor of Olbia, Seventh Nizzi during the presentation press conference -. That’s why, after the 2017 World Judo Championships, announcing the Junior World Championships fills us with pride. To understand the value of the competition, just think that the athletes from all over the world will be the same ones we will see competing for gold at the next Olympics in Paris 2024. “

Gavino Piredda representing regional, national and international judo, he addressed words of thanks to “President Marius Vizer who has chosen and strongly wanted the city of Olbia as the Italian home of the world championship ».

The event foresees the holding of the races that will assign the individual titles from 6 to 9 October, with the holding of the final block starting at 16.00, while the Mixed Team Event will be scheduled on 10 October.

The inauguration ceremony, which will be attended by the president of the International Judo Federation Marius Vizer, the president FIJLKAM Domenico Falcone and the regional and local authorities, will take place on Wednesday 6 October, at 3.00 pm, and in reduced mode, in accordance with the anti-covid restrictions envisaged for the event. It should be emphasized that according to the provisions of the IJF protocols governing the conduct of international competitions, with a view to containing the spread of Covid-19, the event will take place entirely behind closed doors.

The delegations hosted, in fact, must strictly comply with the precautions of the cautionary notice provided within the accommodation facilities indicated by the organization and throughout the Geovillage area, as well as comply with the organizational provisions indicated by the International Judo Federation, published in the official Outlines. of the event and downloadable from the official website of the IJF.

The event will in any case be streamed, both in the preliminary stages and in the final stages, through the platform of the International Federation live.ijf.org.

It is the city of Olbia, therefore, which will host the world championship after the 2019 edition in Marrakech in Morocco and brings back a world judo event in Italy after the 1986 edition at the Eur in Rome, when Domenico Paduano won the bronze medal in the 86 kg and Girolamo Giovinazzo finished fifth in the 60 kg, but there were also athletes who would have written very important pages of world judo at an absolute level, from the great Toshihiko Koga (Jpn), who, unfortunately, left us last March 24 at age of 53, to Daniel Lascau, world champion for Germany in the 78 kg in Barcelona 1991 and, for some time, involved in top positions in the IJF structure which, currently, finds him engaged as chief referee director.

Italy is a large team, as many as 33 athletes, as the status of host country offers the opportunity to exceed the limit of two athletes per weight category to get up to enroll four, where possible and appropriate. The Federation has also implemented an IJF standard just promoted for the cadet and junior classes, in which it was chosen to introduce, starting from the world championship in Olbia, the logic of ‘wild card’ to be applied to the host city and / or region.

An opportunity that in this case rewards Sardinia, which has selected five athletes who, validated by the IJF, will participate in the world championships.
