The camera pans to Federer and everyone freaks out

Roger Federer is one of the big absentees at this year’s Laver Cup. But what does absent mean? The Swiss followed the games from the stands and earned a standing ovation.

After his third knee operation, Roger Federer is not yet able to take part in his Laver Cup as a player. The 40-year-old is still present. As soon as he arrives on crutches in the stadium, he is celebrated by the fans with shouts.

Later it gets really loud in the stadium. During the game between Casper Ruud and Reilly Opelka, the camera picks up the Swiss after a rally and when the audience sees him on the big screen, they spin the bike. They celebrate Federer with standing ovations. At first, Federer seems a little shy, as if it weren’t quite right for him to steal the show from the players on the court.

Finally he gets up from his seat and waves to the fans. The mask hides a large part of his face, but his gaze alone reveals that the gesture of the audience warms his heart.

Team Europe on course even without Federer

By the way, Team Europe leads 3-1 after the first day thanks to victories by Ruud, Matteo Berrettini and Andrej Rublew. Team Welt was only able to get a point in doubles: Isner and Shapovalov prevailed against Berrettini and Zverev.
