The Brazilian Calderano, the first Latin American in the world top 5 table tennis

Sao Paulo, Sep 28 (EFE) .- Brazilian Hugo Calderano celebrated his fifth place in the world table tennis rankings on Tuesday, which has made him the first Latin American to be among the top five in the discipline.

Calderano, 25, climbed from eighth to fifth on the world list, after winning the WTT Star Contender in Doha last Saturday, one of the most important tournaments on the international circuit.

The Brazilian defeated Slovenian Darko Jorgic in the final of the tournament by 4 sets to 2 (11-5, 6-11, 10-12, 11-9, 11-3, 11-9).

The achievement of that WTT (“World Table Tennis”) title was also the first for a Latin American table tennis player, according to the international federation of the modality.

That feat, historic for Brazil and the rest of Latin America, allowed him to climb to fifth place in the world rankings, with 8,464 points.

Calderano, who showed his joy for that fifth place through his social networks, has only 245 points behind the Japanese Tomokazu Harimoto, fourth placed with 8,709 points.

The top three positions are dominated by Chinese table tennis players: Fan Zhendong (12,494), Ma Long (12,212) and Xu Xin (10,356).
