The best sports of the decade

Since 2011, a group of disciplines have been at the fore, in a well-defined way, in the sport of Holguin, although some of them were already outstanding in a previous period.

The places or positions assigned by the results in the competitive events of the different categories in the main aspect taken into account for the qualification of the discipline in question. But other elements confirm their privileged locations, such as athletes promoted to national centers, individuals and contributions in international championships.

In this panorama, cycling is distinguished, due to its meritorious competitive results in school, youth and adults, plus the number of riders as enrollments in national centers. For example, the integral places, since 2013, for all the results in tournaments of the different categories, show that this discipline is the leading one, with places always among the first four.

Nearby is candle, with positions between two and four. Weightlifting also stands out with first and second places from 2013 to 2018, but dropped to ninth in 2019. In recent years it has had several outstanding weightlifters.

Chess, as is traditional, occupies a prominent position in the avant-garde group, mostly with places in the top four and always with several players of value.

Similar are the annual integral figures that show fencing and judo, with predominant positions in the group of the first five, plus distinguished competitors.

Likewise, taekwondo has places in the initial seven, while the collective disciplines that stand out are handball and softball, whose teams have been several times on the podium of the national championships.

The men’s national team is the one that has achieved the most titles in the sport of this province, with five crowns.

In other sports with less relevance than the previous ones, the integral positive figures of the year predominate: badminton, shooting, artistic and rhythmic gymnastics and rowing.
