The African Athletics Confederation (CAA) has registered the transfer of the 2022 African Championships from Cameroon to Mauritius. This 23rd edition should take place from June 8 to 12, at the Côte d’Or Sports Complex, which notably hosted part of the 2019 Indian Ocean Islands Games.

New change for the African Athletics Championships. After seeing the 2020 edition in Oran be postponed to 2021 because of the Covid, relocated to Algiers, then transferred to Nigeria, before being finally canceled, it is the turn of the 2022 edition to undergo changes.

But nothing so uncertain this time. The African Athletics Confederation (CAA) preferred to take the lead on September 28, 2021. It relocated to Mauritius on 23e African Championships promised in Cameroon.

After 1992 and 2006, the Mauritian Republic will therefore be the scene of this event for the third time. ” Maurice manifested himself and we were very happy to see that there was a country which manifested itself. We did not hesitate », Welcomes CAA Director General Lamine Faty.

The local authorities have already thought about dates, from June 8 to 12, and a place, the Sports Complex of Côte d’Or. A site, in an idyllic setting, which notably hosted part of the 2019 Indian Ocean Islands Games.

No decision for the 2024 edition

It is not, however, only for the beauty of the setting that the CAA preferred Mauritius to Cameroon. “ Perhaps the Cameroonian Athletics Federation was not ready or, in any case, the infrastructure was not yet ready to host the competition., explains Lamine Faty. We had no information so far as to the location of the competition. It was up to the Cameroonian Federation and the local authorities to tell us the location. But we couldn’t get to this stage of the process ».

The Cameroonian press assures that the Olembe Stadium, in Yaoundé, was expected. But all efforts are currently being made to prepare for matches for the next African Cup of Nations football (“CAN 2021”), scheduled from January 9 to February 6, 2022 in Cameroon.

The Cameroonian media have also indicated that Cameroon will be offered to organize the African Championships 2024. On the side of the CAA, it is assured that no decision has been taken in this direction, this September 28, 2021, at the end of the virtual Congress of the body.
