Tennis.-Djokovic resigns from Indian Wells: “I’m sorry I can’t play in the desert, my favorite place”

MADRID, 29 (EUROPA PRESS)

The world number one, Novak Djokovic, has resigned this Wednesday from the Indian Wells tournament, the seventh Masters 1000 of the season, after announcing his withdrawal through a brief statement where he regrets losing playing “in the desert”, his “place favorite”.

The Belgrade, who has won the tournament five times, has decided to withdraw this time. Djokovic has already won the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon titles this season, but was unable to complete the ‘Grand Slam’ by falling in the US Open final by Daniil Medvedev earlier this month.

The Serb said on Twitter: “I’m sorry I can’t see my supporters in Indian Wells and play in the desert, my favorite place. Hope to see you next year!”

Tournament director Tommy Haas regretted Djokovic’s decision. “We are disappointed that Novak cannot join us at the BNP Paribas Open this fall. We look forward to seeing him back at ‘Tennis Paradise’ next March to fight for a record sixth title in the desert.”
