SZ podcast: World Cup every two years? – Sports

The international game calendars for soccer players will expire at the end of 2023 and 2024 – and then what? If Fifa President Gianni Infantino has his way, the highlights will be even closer in the future: He wants a world championship every two years. It’s about money, power – and the question of the direction in which football is developing. Infantino gets a lot of headwind. The European Football Union Uefa is threatening a boycott, many leagues, clubs, coaches and players as well as coaches are against a changed rhythm.

What is behind the idea, what is behind the protest against it? How realistic is an implementation? What exactly is the reform supposed to look like? And who has what interests? Moderator Anna Dreher, SZ sports director Claudio Catuogno and sports policy expert Thomas Kistner talk about this in this episode of “And now for sports”.

Football Bundesliga, Champions League, sports policy at Fifa and DFB: SZ sports editors discuss the background of current events every week in the sports podcast of the Süddeutsche Zeitung.
