Steven Defour tells us about his new life: “It was a relief to quit. I was in pain every day”

Before returning to Parc Astrid, Steven Defour tells us about his new life as a coach in the Malinois staff.

He had been announced to us with five kilos more, only four months after his retirement. But we didn’t see anything, with the naked eye anyway. “I do have these kilos but it remains hidden. But there, I reached the limit; it annoys me. I be careful not to go higher. I don’t want to be a big coach but it is not easy to find time to play sports with this job. “

To find Steven Defour in Mechelen, you now have to go to the coaches’ locker room. Last May, he announced the end of his career, at age 33. Before returning to Parc Astrid on Sunday, we sat down for an hour with the 2007 Golden Shoe to talk about his new career. But also a bit of his old one.

What is the life of a coach like?

“It starts a lot earlier and I didn’t expect it (smile). I must be at the club at 7:15 am The other staff members come from quite far away and they want to arrive before the traffic jams. Me, I I live in Antwerp and I am very close but I adapt. The weeks when I have my daughter, I bring her at 7.15 am to the school in Mechelen where my sister is a teacher. And in ten minutes, I am at the club. Wouter (Vrancken) is flexible and leaves me that little delay. At the start of the week, the day ends around 5 pm. When we approach the match and everything is ready, it is after 3 pm. “

What is your role within the staff?
