FC Groningen sees main sponsor leave
4:46 PM: FC Groningen has to find a new main sponsor. There is not much haste yet, because the current name on the Office Center shirt will only disappear after the 2022/23 season.
The company and FC Groningen will remain connected afterwards, but not in the same construction as at present.
FC Groningen and Office Center had an agreement for an unlimited period, with a notice period of at least eighteen months. “It is great that they have made this known in time,” says Groningen director Wouter Gudde. “We can now start working with potential partners for the main sponsorship at FC Groningen and we are confident that we will end up with a very nice match.”
Cagliari also puts trainer on the street
4:22 p.m.: After Hellas Verona, Cagliari has also evicted his trainer after three matches. 54-year-old coach Leonardo Semplici saved Cagliari from relegation from Serie A last season.
Semplici has so far taken 1 point this season with Cagliari in Serie A. In the first league match, the Sardinian club drew 2-2 at home against keeper Jeroen Zoet’s Spezia. Cagliari then went down against AC Milan (4-1) and Genoa (2-3).
Kevin Strootman plays for Cagliari this season. The club hires him from Olympique Marseille, with the option of another season.
Koeman has Pique back for a duel with Bayern Munich
12.35 pm: FC Barcelona coach Ronald Koeman can use Gerard Pique on Tuesday evening in the Champions League match against Bayern Munich. The medical staff of Barcelona announced on match day that Pique is fully fit again. The 34-year-old defender has been sidelined in recent weeks with a calf injury.
Pique was injured in the second league game of the season, against Athletic (1-1). Without the refined defender, Barcelona then won against Getafe (2-1).
Former Ajax player Sergiño Dest suffered an ankle injury during the international match, but the American international can also participate against Bayern Munich. The right back is part of the selection of 23 players, including three internationals from Orange: Frenkie de Jong, Memphis Depay and Luuk de Jong. The latter can make his debut against Bayern in the Barcelona shirt. The Catalan club took over De Jong from Sevilla on a rental basis just before the end of the transfer period.
The game in Camp Nou starts at 9 p.m.
National coach De Kogel away from Dutch beach volleyball players
12.34 pm: The Dutch beach volleyball players are getting a new national coach. De Nevobo has decided not to renew Richard de Kogel’s expiring contract, although the women of the Beach Volleyball Team Netherlands under his leadership had met the performance goals. However, the volleyball association wants to give the beach volleyball program “a new impulse by appointing another coach.”
De Kogel was appointed national coach after the Rio 2016 Games. The former beach volleyball player succeeded Scotsman Morph Bowes at the time.
Under the leadership of De Kogel, Sanne Keizer and Madelein Meppelink won the European title in 2018. They also managed to qualify for the Tokyo Games, just like the young duo Katja Stam/Raïsa Schoon. However, both couples were eliminated early at the global sporting event last summer. Stam and Schoon did take silver at the European Championships in Vienna last month.
Sporting trains with Inácio and Tomás for a duel with Ajax
12:06 pm: Gonçalo Inácio and Tiago Tomás joined Sporting Portugal’s group training on Tuesday. They may be available on Wednesday evening for the home game against Ajax in the Champions League.
Inácio and Tomás missed Saturday’s home game against FC Porto (1-1). Pedro Goncalves did not appear on the training field on Tuesday. Trainer Rúben Amorim stated last Saturday that he will have to miss his injured star player for at least another week. Goncalves had a large share in Sporting’s first league title in 19 years with 23 goals last season. Captain Sebastián Coates has been suspended for the meeting with Ajax.
Sporting’s final training session for the first group match against Ajax was only open to the media for fifteen minutes. Trainer Amorim will give a press conference on Tuesday evening. He may then tell whether Inácio and Tomás can play against Ajax.
Hellas Verona fires trainer Di Francesco after three duels
11:59 a.m.: Italian football club Hellas Verona has fired trainer Eusebio Di Francesco after three league matches. Di Francesco, 52, had only just been employed in Verona for a few months.
Hellas Verona has not yet taken a point in Serie A, just like Salernitana. Sassuolo (2-3), Internazionale (1-3) and Bologna (1-0) proved too strong for the club from the north of Italy.
Di Francesco succeeded the Croat Ivan Juric in Verona. Juric is now Torino’s coach. In the past, Di Francesco worked for AS Roma and Sampdoria, among others.
Dortmund without Hazard to Istanbul for Champions League
11.16 am: Borussia Dortmund will have to make do in the opening game of the Champions League without Belgian midfielder Thorgan Hazard, who has not traveled to Istanbul. Dortmund will face Besiktas in Ajax’s group on Wednesday.
Hazard, 28, has an ankle injury. Giovanni Reyna, Emre Can and Nico Schulz are also injured in Germany. Defender Mats Hummels, who had knee problems, is fit again.
The match between Besiktas and Borussia Dortmund starts at 6.45 pm. From 9 p.m. Ajax will take on Sporting in Portugal.
