With a triple success, the junior judokas of the Interreg judo team celebrated an impressive return to the competition. At the Cracow Judo Open in the Polish city of Krakow, a total of five young judokas from the international cooperation project under the direction of the Speyer trainer Markus Kost – Nicola Yatsko (-55kg) and Micha Welter (-73kg) from Luxembourg in the male U16, as well as Leni Welter (- 57kg) from Luxembourg and the two Speyer women Alesia Büttner (-52kg) and Carolin Dietrich (-48kg) in the female U14.
At the tournament with around 800 participants – around half Polish and half international judokas, the teams were accommodated in a sports complex in which the hotel is located right next to the judo hall and which also includes a swimming pool and a weight room.
The two boys in the Interreg team started in the U16 tournaments. Both Micga Welter and Nicola Yatsko won their opening fights, but lost in the second round and had to say goodbye to the tournament.
At the U14 tournament on the following day, the three fighters of the Interreg team were a bit nervous at first, but got better and better into the fights, all improved from round to round and made it into their respective finals. Leni Welter as well as Alesia Büttner and Carolin Dietrich also highlighted their best performances for the final fights and all three crowned their appearance with the title.
Afterwards, coach Markus Kost was correspondingly satisfied: “Above all, it was important to regain competition experience after a year and a half break from the tournament. The fact that it was an international tournament right away is also due to the fact that there is currently little on offer in Germany for this age group. So it wasn’t easy to get started, even if it wasn’t an absolute top tournament, but at least it was more crowded than a regional tournament here in Germany. But our judokas did it really well! “
