Racing Genk dropped points against Union yesterday. The home side did take the lead after a questionable penalty phase. That penalty and the red card for Union came after an intervention by the VAR. Many people frowned, but the Referee Department thinks it was the right decision.
Frank De Bleeckere comes to explain the decision again. “Bager runs up to the Genk attacker from behind and overthrows him in the penalty area. The referee lets play, but the VAR asks for a review and after viewing the images, the referee gives a penalty kick and a red card to Jonas Bager. “
De Bleeckere calls that a right decision. “Red because the defender does not have the opportunity and the intention to play the ball and deprives the attacker a real chance of scoring.”
