President of Panama will attend the UN Assembly and promote investments

Panama City, Sep 19 (EFE) .- The president of Panama, Laurentino Cortizo, will travel to New York this Monday to participate in the seventy-sixth session of the United Nations General Assembly and meet with managers of companies and funds in order to to attract investment to the country, whose economy has been hit hard by the effects of the pandemic.

Cortizo will participate in the opening ceremony of the UN Ordinary Assembly debate next Tuesday, while on Thursday he will give his official speech on that stage, a statement from the Presidency reported.

The official information detailed that next Tuesday the Panamanian president will meet with the VISA Group, with the president of the World Bank, David Malpass, and with representatives of investment funds such as Notarc, Canada Pension Plan (CPP Fund), Brooksfield and KKR to discuss possible investments in the Central American country.

In 2020, the effects of the pandemic brought down foreign direct investment (FDI) in Panama by 86.4%, gross domestic product (GDP) by 17.9% and shot unemployment and informality rates to 18.5 % and more than 52% from 7.1% and 45%, respectively.

Next Wednesday Cortizo will hold meetings with the senior director and head of Latin America at the World Economic Forum, Marisol Argueta and with businessman Michael Bloomberg, with whom he will sign the “agreement for the celebration of the ‘New Economy Forum’ to be held in April 2022 “Panama.

On that day, the Panamanian president will also sign a “memorandum of understanding with Major League Baseball (MLB) to promote the sport in Latin America” ​​and the “establishment of a High Performance Baseball Center for the development of talents in Panama Oeste.”

“This agreement will be signed with Commissioner Robert Manfred, with the presence of the Panamanian glory of baseball Mariano Rivera as an honorary witness,” reported the Presidency of Panama.

On Thursday after his official speech at the UN Assembly, Cortizo and his delegation “will meet with the CEO of Nasdaq and Fuel Venture. Nasdaq is the second largest automated and electronic stock exchange in the United States and the first in New York. that include the companies of high technology, electronics, informatics, telecommunications, biotechnology, etc “.

Cortizo will be accompanied on his trip to New York by his wife, Yazmín Colón de Cortizo; the chancellor, Erika Mouynes; the Minister of Commerce and Industry, Ramón Martínez; the Minister Counselor for the Facilitation of Private Investment, José Alejandro Rojas; the Vice Minister of Foreign Trade, Juan Carlos Sosa; the General Administrator of Tourism, Iván Eskildsen, and the Director of PANDEPORTES Héctor Brands, among other officials.

The President of the Republic and the delegation that accompanies him will be back on Panamanian soil on Thursday night, the official statement added. EFE
