Mesut Özil made a guest appearance on Thursday with Fenerbahce Istanbul in Frankfurt (1: 1). A day later, the soccer star gave an election recommendation.
The former German team player is entitled to vote in the federal elections on September 26th and will vote for the German splinter party of former CDU member Jürgen Todenhöfer. Özil announced this in a social media post and posted a photo with the politician.
“My meeting with Germany’s bravest politician Jürgen Todenhöfer. When I was going through a difficult time at the World Cup three years ago, he was behind me and I am behind him. On September 26th I will vote for Team Todenhöfer,” commented the Fenerbahce- Star the photo.
With his text, Özil alluded to the Erdogan affair. The two German team players Özil and Ilkay Gündogan had themselves photographed with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan before the 2018 World Cup and presented the head of state with jerseys. After the photo session and a messed up World Cup finals, Özil resigned from the German national team with allegations of racism against the DFB.
The 80-year-old Todenhöfer previously sat for the CDU in the German Bundestag, in 2020 he founded his splinter party.
