He exudes confidence and creates a positive mood. At his premiere as national coach, however, Hans-Dieter Flick noticed that there was still a lot of work waiting for him. The national team is a building site with a lot to do.

FIt was enough for a victory. But admittedly, the whole great enthusiasm was not triggered by the 2-0 win in the first international match under the direction of national coach Hans-Dieter “Hansi” Flick. The German national soccer team had a surprisingly difficult time against Liechtenstein, after all, the 189th world ranking.

After strong opening minutes, she acted much too slowly and knew no means at all to prevail against the low-lying opponent. Speed, courage and willingness to take risks – things that the new coach wanted to see – couldn’t be seen – and that against a team in which four players were in the starting eleven who play in the fourth division of Switzerland, one even in the fifth . In the second half there was even a player from Liechtenstein who plays in the sixth division in Switzerland.

Whistles from the stands

The German players, however, all of whom are in action in one of the top leagues in Europe on a day-to-day basis, lacked wit and ideas. There were hardly any deep runs, hardly any flank changes. When one or the other tried a long ball after the break, there were whistles from the stands. It was the receipt for a not very nice football.

Magic, Flick had said himself beforehand, could not be done either. Proof that everything doesn’t go better straight away, just because Joachim Löw, whom he inherited after 15 years in office, is no longer on the sidelines, but he delivered the game on Thursday evening in St. Gallen. After many dreary months, in which the appendix had last turned away from the elite selection, the hope for a quick recovery was great. The football that had been partly played under Löw in the past few months was too bad.

The German team hardly radiated any danger, did not act creatively enough and, compared to one or the other competitor, looked as if they had stopped in their development. The audience, it seemed, was tired of the eternal yogi that led Germany to the 2014 World Cup.

But the appendix has to be patient, so the realization after the premiere of Flick.

The new national coach had created a lot of positive mood in the past few days. He radiated confidence, a lot of joy. There was talk of optimism. The word “new beginning” was often mentioned, and it was not uncommon for people to point out that they are now starting from scratch. These were important signals, after the knockout round at the European Championships, whether the bad image attached to the team known as “The Team” and, last but not least, whether a quarreling association currently headed by two interim presidents, a strong one DFB selection that can again create a kind of togetherness in Germany’s sporting world.

It will probably take some time before the country’s elite selection regains its former strength and radiates dominance. At least she has the next opportunity to prove herself on the arduous journey there on Sunday – then national coach Flick and his team will meet Armenia in Stuttgart.
