A CBA franchise with a name already existed from 1989 to 1992 San Jose Jammerswho played in the 1991/92 season as Bakersfield Jammers played in Bakersfield. At the end of this season, however, the Jammers were discontinued.
Today’s Suns were newly inducted into the NBA Development League for the 2006/2007 season as the Bakersfield Jam. The league had previously announced that a new franchise would be set up in Bakersfield. For the 2007/2008 season, fans could vote on whether the team should get a new name. The names were available for selection: Bakersfield Desperados, Bakersfield Roughnecks, Bakersfield Oilers or continue Bakersfield Jam. Fans decided that the Bakersfield Jam name should continue.
