More space for top-class sport

The area includes the existing Ahorn Sports Park Hall and surrounding open spaces. On the grounds of the park, which has been developed since 1984 and originally created privately by Heinz Nixdorf, the current capacities are currently insufficient in view of the intensive use and the promotion of top-class sports in the areas of baseball, squash and athletics. The planned steps are therefore to expand the existing sports hall in the north with a baseball hall as well as strength and athletics rooms.

Construction of sports homes planned

The parking spaces that have been replaced by this will be compensated for by “parking pallets” on existing parking spaces in the eastern area and henceforth will form a mobility hub that will also include bicycle parking spaces and charging stations for e-cars. As part of a “campus concept”, the construction of athletes’ homes is also planned in order to be able to offer overnight accommodation. It is not yet certain whether a hotel complex or a sports boarding school is more suitable.

The concept also deals with the question of how the existing facilities are to be connected to the new construction measures. A relocation of the entrance is being considered.

The campus concept also includes a reorganization of the traffic situation: According to this, a turning hammer is to be built in the north, whereby the connection to Ahorn-Allee will disappear and a new access will be set up instead. The old connection should then only be accessible for bus traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians. In addition, “semi-public sports activities” are to be set up in the entrance area, which Renate Ahrens described in more detail with parcours facilities and climbing walls. A green area in the immediate vicinity should also serve as a communication point. Green areas should also connect the Alme-Aue and the existing SCP facilities. In addition, there is currently no bike path connection. The existing connection on Ahorn-Allee in the direction of Heinz-Nixdorf-Ring is therefore to be expanded.

Autumn 2022 is targeted as the starting point

In parallel to the planning of the sports park expansion, preparations for the renaturation of the alpine pastures are taking place by the Obere Lippe water association. Since the land use and development plan also take into account parts of the landscape protection area on both sides of the Alme-Aue, good coordination between the two projects is very important and given, according to Ahrens. Since the completed renaturation will still take about a year and the construction projects in the Ahorn Sports Park will only start afterwards, autumn 2022 is targeted as the starting point. The date, however, depends on how the individual procedural steps run and the development plan is accepted.

Concern among the visitors to the information event was particularly the planned cycle path connection in the direction of Elsen, the necessity of which was questioned. Instead, a disturbance to both the residents and the flora and fauna is to be expected. However, the visitors present were satisfied with the general ideas and construction measures for the sports park.

Further statements on the planned construction measures, which can also be found in the Paderborn land-use planning portal, can be sent to the city administration in person or online as part of the first step of “early participation by the public and authorities” by October 15.
