In the words of Jerry Jones, the defense is going to improve a lot more in 2021

Taking into account that the Cowboys started with the left foot against Tampa Bay, it must be said that they came out with their heads held high. The reigning Super Bowl champions managed to win by just one field goal within seconds of the game ending. Leaving a bitter result of 31 to 29, but that left many positive aspects of the team.

Among them, we must highlight the great work in the rival land game. Where the cowboy defense only allowed 52 total yards for the Buccaneers. In addition, the team achieved a total of four recoveries, two of them by interceptions and two more balls recovered after a couple of fumbles. Sadly, one of the interceptions was invalid, but Jourdan Lewis stood out with a 66-yard dash off a “Hail Mary” made by Tom Brady within seconds of going into halftime.

It’s for this and more that Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is pleased with the defensive performance he saw Thursday night. Despite the negative result, great improvements have been seen and it is expected that this will continue.

“What I see is a defense that is going to get better,” Jones said. “We have the athletes and the schemes to do it. We were playing with a highly competitive team. It gave me great pride to see the good things that happened during the meeting ”.

Of course, there are details that still need to be taken into account and they have to do with some elements of the secondary line. As is the particular case of cornerback Anthony Brown, who was not very lucid during the match and on more than one occasion the receiver Antonio Brown managed to circumvent his coverage. Very different case from Trevon Diggs, who looked very good many times, even having his own interception. As he had been commenting from press conferences in Oxnard, that he was going to look for at least one interception per game.

Likewise, it must be taken into account that some defensive elements are missing and they will be returning in a few weeks. As are the cases of defensive tackle Neville Gallimore, cornerback Kelvin Joseph and safety Malik Hooker. Without question, the Cowboys have made a great overall impression when it comes to their defense. And at least they are sure that there are still other elements missing to jump onto the playing field.

Returning to Jones’ statements, he praised the work of rookie Micah Parsons. Who had the opportunity to start as a starter without problems. “Micah was very close on some things,” Jones continued. “It will get there either way. When you’re a young gamer and you really get those snaps, everyone is watching you. Of course you grow up, the problem is the price you pay as you do it. These young people are going to do that for us and this scheme is going to be even more feasible for these guys, because they are going to have more time on it ”.

Parsons overall finished with seven combined tackles. Unfortunately, he did not make a recovery, but it is something that will happen sooner or later. As DeMarcus Lawrence and Randy Gregory did during the meeting, in one of the many recoveries of the Lone Star team.

“We have a serious advantage on defense,” Jerry said. “It is one of the best things, from which you can get something positive. We are going to improve defensively and we did not play badly against a good team on Thursday night ”.

Jerry Jones’ statements go hand in hand with what was seen on the field of play against Tampa Bay. As mentioned, there are still things to improve very punctually, but in general, the defense left everything on the field against the reigning Super Bowl champions. Now the detail will be to maintain this rhythm in the next few weeks that are to come.
