Champions League: ManUnited starts with a defeat in Bern

Champions League

Young Boys Bern caused a surprise at the start of the group stage of the Champions League. The Swiss champions turned the match against Manchester United in front of more than 30,000 spectators in the sold-out Wankdorf Stadium on Tuesday evening and defeated the English favorites 2-1 after a 0-1 deficit. Jordan Siebatcheu shot the Swiss to victory in the 95th minute.

All eyes in Bern were initially on United returnees Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese superstar completed his 177th game in the European premier class in Bern, drawing level with record holder Iker Casillas. “CR7” did not last long and after a spectacular pass from Bruno Fernandes put the guests in the lead with his 135th goal in the Champions League. Ronaldo hit through the legs of goalie David von Ballmoos (13th).

However, Bern was by no means shocked, but repeatedly launched strong attacks. In addition, Manchester weakened itself: full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka was rightly red carded after a bad kick on the ankle of Christopher Martins Pereira (35th).

In half two, the Young Boys increased their offensive efforts and were rewarded. After a Stangl pass, United defender Raphael Varane came too late, and Nicolas Moumi Ngamaleu spiked the leather untenable into the goal (66th). In the 72nd minute it was over for Ronaldo, Jesse Lingard was exchanged for him. And Lingard of all people made a serious mistake in stoppage time. The 28-year-old Englishman served the ball with a bad pass to Siebatcheu, who had little trouble defeating United goalie David de Gea.
