Champions League: Adeyemi shoots Salzburg to home win

The Salzburg penalty festival in this season of the elite league was continued in Austria. At the start in Spain there were already four penalties (CL record), three for Salzburg and still a draw. This time they “only” got two out of them and won: After half an hour in which Lille had advantages, Adeyemi drew the fourth penalty foul of this CL season and scored himself (35th) – in Seville, the 19-year-old DFB- Team striker another penalty.

After a handball by striker Burak Yilmaz, Adeyemi again increased from the point (53rd). The Turkish Lille striker shortened with a free kick and with the help of goalie Philipp Köhn (62nd), but Salzburg ultimately earned the first win over time. The home side celebrated their first success in the premier class since December and were also unbeaten in their 15th game of the season.

Not much has happened after two match days, but Salzburg lead the table with four points after a third. In the parallel game, the German club VfL Wolfsburg (2) and Sevilla (2) separated 1: 1. The “bulls” in the premier class will continue with a home game: on October 20, Wolfsburg will be in Salzburg.

With Wöber and Okafor against Weah junior and Co.

The most important personnel issue was only resolved about an hour before kick-off: Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle was able to fall back on the most recently injured Maximilian Wöber. With that, the hospital’s central defense was at least a little lighter, with Oumar Solet and Kamil Piatkowski two central defenders missing even longer. Compared to the 1-1 draw in Seville at the beginning, Jerome Onguene started instead of Solet and Noah Okafor in the attack instead of Benjamin Sesko.

“Okafor has done really well in the last few weeks, he showed us what we wanted to see, so it was clear that he would be allowed to play again from the start,” said Jaissle. The most expensive purchase in the club’s history (11.2 million euros, note) did not have an easy time with its own fans after long start-up difficulties.

The guests from France came to Austria without superstars, but without them they became champions this year in front of a certain Paris Saint-Germain. Football fans from the 1990s got their money’s worth when the son of the Liberian legend George Weah, Timothy, took part. The father became a world footballer in 1995 and is now president, while his son slipped into the starting line-up against Lilles 0-0 against Wolfsburg.

Lille gains slight advantages at first

The newly retired Salzburg record scorer Jonatan Soriano and the long-term injured local tennis ace Dominic Thiem saw the first half an hour in which the guests were better in the game, like the other 24,205 spectators in Wals-Siezenheim. The old warrior Yilmaz gave off the first warning shot in the second minute.

The “mastiffs” proved to be more snappy in duels and pressing, with the ball being played straight forward and cleanly. So they skilfully evaded the attacks of the home side. Lille also proved why they only got 23 goals in Ligue 1 last season and pulled the “bulls” off the hook for the time being. Okafor’s first goal was easy prey for goalie Ivo Grbic (12th).

Adeyemi draws a penalty foul again

After about half an hour, Salzburg captured the ball once in the opposing half, and Grbic was again unable to demand Adeyemi’s low shot (26th). Four minutes later, the post went for it: After a quick attack on Camara and Aaronson, Adeyemi pushed his extraordinary pace and was brought down by Sven Botman. The Turkish referee Halil Meler immediately decided on a penalty – but it took Adeyemi no less than five minutes.

The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) stepped in, Meler took a look at the screen and had to clarify two situations: Had Adeyemi previously illegally brought down Gabriel Gudmundsson during the running duel? Did Botman just get the ball in the end? Both were answered with “No” and after Lille’s violent but ultimately pointless complaints, Adeyemi’s fourth penalty foul was drawn in this Champions League season. In Seville, the German team striker took three out and shot one – this time he scored, even if Grbic was on the top left.

The leadership gave the Salzburgers self-confidence in their offensive actions. If the efforts were previously carried out sloppily, it is now better for them to settle in the danger zone. So it came to that corner that Kristensen headed to the pole. Wöber’s margin went into the outside netting (41st). It was just in time to get into the cabins before a heavy shower hit the arena.

Next penalty for Salzburg

After the break, the guests initially took over the command again, but without any further great chances. After five minutes, Salzburg were able to create accents themselves for the first time after the break – that should once again lead to a penalty.

Mohamed Camara, who played strongly that evening, brought out a foul near the penalty area, Wöber took on the matter and hit the wall – in which Yilmaz had carelessly raised his hand and thus the fifth Salzburg penalty in the second game of the season caused. This time, Adeyemi was even more confident and ensured a relaxed atmosphere (53rd).

Failure remains without consequences

But it wouldn’t be Salzburg if it played this comfortable lead home. Lille coach Joceyln Gourvennec brought three fresh forces after an hour, but a 36-year-old striker ultimately made for the connection goal: Yilmaz brought a free kick from the left with force on the gate, Goalie Köhn was also there, but steered the leather into them own mesh – a goalie mistake (62nd).

So it was naturally exciting again, but Salzburg also converted the defensive security they had recently won in the premier class. Afterwards, Köhn did not show the mistake and anticipated the few offensive actions of the guests. Adeyemi left the field with a standing ovation, he didn’t have to tremble from the bench because Lille didn’t get a good chance. Internationally, Salzburg has been waiting for a game without conceding a goal since February 2019, but that didn’t detract from the mood. The first promotion to the round of 16 has come a little closer again.

Voices for the game:

Matthias Jaissle (Salzburg coach): It was very difficult today because Lille are a top team and they have quality. They used the space very well. But we fought our way in and then had better access to the game. So, a strong performance from us in that respect. With such a young group, that is not something that can be taken for granted. But how they keep marching on, that makes me extremely positive for the next few weeks. “

Karim Adeyemi (Salzburg double goalscorer): “We knew from the start that something was going to happen here – and we showed it. At 2-1 we had to sweat a bit. The championship lead doesn’t mean anything yet, but we’ll continue. “

Andreas Ulmer (Salzburg captain): “It’s a great evening. Lille are a really good team with a lot of quality on the offensive, wherever something can happen. But we really invested a lot to get a win. Everyone did that very, very well today. “

Jocelyn Gourvennec (Little Coach): “It’s frustrating not to have more points. But that wasn’t our last word. We didn’t give up, the players fought, and there was no lack of commitment. We came back into the game, they were waiting for the counterattack. We may have attacked in a disorganized way. We didn’t take advantage of our chances against Wolfsburg either, we have to improve our degree. “
