Dthree times behind, and then won 4: 3 with the last goal of a breathtaking Saturday afternoon: That triggered a feeling of happiness that was not so intensely savored for a long time among the players and supporters of Borussia Dortmund. The new table runner-up in the Bundesliga passed the test of strength at the old Bayer 04 Leverkusen runner-up despite defensive weaknesses thanks to great morale and inexhaustible energy reserves.
The Rhinelander, actually on an equal footing, lost in the end through a controversial penalty kick that striker Erling Haaland used to make it 4: 3 (77th minute) for BVB, it was his fifth goal after four match days. Before that, the Werkself had always been in front. New international team Wirtz (9th) scored for 1: 0, Schick (45th + 2) for 2: 1, Diaby (58th) for 3: 2. But every time BVB equalized with Haaland (37th), Brandt (49th) and Guerreiro (71st). That spoke for the morale of the Westphalia beyond any doubt in their most spectacular game of the season so far.
“The most important thing is the three points,” said BVB coach Marco Rose on his 45th birthday after the game that was like a party: “It was a top Bundesliga game. From a coach’s point of view, however, you want a lot of things different, ”he said:“ We conceded too many goals. ”Bayer Leverkusen’s coach Gerardo Seoane also praised the great game as“ a spectacle for the spectators. We love this sport for that. ”It was annoying,“ if you take the lead three times and then lose ”.
But Bayer 04 had nothing to reproach themselves for, and BVB had never let themselves be beaten: this resulted in memorable football games. “It was a wild ninety minutes,” said Dortmund captain Marco Reus, “overall we weren’t compact enough and we conceded simple goals.” For Leverkusen midfielder Robert Andrich, “a 3: 3 after an intense game would have been okay”.
The top game started as quickly as hoped. Without any grooving at the meeting of two particularly strong teams, an open exchange of blows began, which carried away and enthused the audience. The Werkself celebrated their football based on early ball conquests and counterattacks quickly executed. Bayer scored both goals in the first half after frivolous Dortmund ball losses at the pace with which young international Wirtz Diabys passed before he gave Kobel no chance with a low shot into the right corner. It was similar in stoppage time in the first half, when BVB only seemed to know the forward gear and this time Wirtz took advantage of another carelessness of BVB. Center forward Schick used his template with a robust 16-meter shot to make it 2-1, his third Bundesliga goal this season.
Top game with an open sight
Before that, the Westphalians put themselves in a jubilant mood when Haaland refined Meunier’s template with a header goal, which is not so often the case with the tall Norwegian. The alleged 2-1 lead of the offensively strong BVB through a double-headed action between Haaland and Bellingham (39th) after Meunier’s next flank was withdrawn by referee Siebert’s intervention by the video assistant. Dahoud had fouled Diaby in the creation of the hit and thus had a decisive influence on the course of things.
The 17,605 spectators in the sold-out BayArena were delighted at the break with a duel rich in opportunities, both here and there, which managed without major safety precautions and was fought with an open visor.
And so it went on after the break, when the former Leverkusen-based Julian Brandt, for the first time in a long time in the starting eleven, was obviously unimpressed by one or two unsuccessful actions and after Haaland’s gaudy presentation and a perfect ball acceptance the ball from close range and heaved into the gate gable at an acute angle. The spectacular 2: 2 rewarded the team that had never lost faith in themselves and their qualities despite two painful setbacks.
Would Bayer fight back now? And how! This time the sprint and dribble king Moussa Diaby was looking for a direct finish on the penalty area line when he surprised goalkeeper Gregor Kobel with a low shot. What an attractive match on this Saturday afternoon, in which there was no shortage of goals, as is so often the case when Bayer and BVB meet.
And now, BVB? The Westphalia, who sometimes offered gaps in the central midfield – namely Dahoud and Witsel – continued to fight for equalizing justice, but were faced with a high-class opponent. On the other hand, Bayer did not have a free-kick specialist like Raphael Guerreiro, who after Frimpong’s foul on substitute Malen artfully flicked the ball into the Leverkusen triangle to make it 3: 3 with feeling and precision.
The madness just never ended. Now the video assistant Guido Winkmann grabbed Koussounou’s hand in Reus’ face a second time and convinced referee Siebert to look at the scene again on the screen. The Berliner saw enough out of his eyes to decide on an at least questionable penalty kick, since the action that had grown out of a duel was not crystal clear and certainly not premeditated. And the fiery northerner Haaland did not miss it. Wildly determined, he smashed the ball into the goal for Dortmund’s first lead. 4: 3, it stayed after ninety minutes, which nobody who was there will soon forget.
