Baseball – Netherlands win European Baseball Championship – Germany ninth

Cologne (SID) – The top favorite Netherlands has won the EM title in baseball for the fourth time in a row. The record European champions won the final in Turin, Italy against the surprise finalist Israel after a long deficit 9: 4. For the Netherlands it was the 24th title at the 36th European Championship, third place went to hosts Italy.

The Dutch looked like the loser for a long time, but turned a 4-1 deficit into a 5-4 lead in the seventh inning. Since 1969, the Netherlands and Italy have always worked out the title among themselves.

The German team secured ninth place on Saturday with their fourth win in a row. The team of national coach Steve Janssen prevailed in the placement game against Russia with 4: 1. It is the worst European Championship performance since twelfth place in 2003.

DBV President Jürgen Elsishans had set the goal of a top four result, two years ago at the European Championships at home, Germany had achieved sixth place.
