A joy for Chilean tennis: Gonzalo Lama returns in Quito to the final of a challenger after five years

Gonzalo Lama (417 °) confirmed the great level he is having this season. Today, after five and a half years, he scored again in a Challenger final. He did it in Quito, after defeating the Spanish Pol Martín Tiffón (453 °), 7-6 (11) and 6-4, in a close match.

Both tennis players had met a month and a half ago in Guayaquil, with a comfortable victory for the Chilean, but this time the process was much narrower, influenced by the more than 2,800 meters above sea level that the Ecuadorian capital has.

As throughout the week, the Lion was highly solid with his service. In fact, he did not even concede break opportunities, and thanks to this weapon he was also able to win the set points against him in the tie break. Precisely, in the tiebreaker and as happened in the duel against Thiago Tirante, the mental strength weighed to award it.

In the second set, the Spanish tried to put pressure, but Cristóbal Saavedra’s pupil was not worried and resolved in a great way. A break in the tenth game, gave him tickets to the final of the contest, where he will face the duel between the Argentine Facundo Mena (322 °), who beat the French Alexis Gautier (444 °), 6-2, 4- 6 and 6-2.

Lama’s victory will allow him to jump at least 82 positions in the ranking, since he will be ranked 335 this Monday. If he wins the final, it will be 300th.

Tomorrow’s game will be the third definition of his career in this type of tournament, winning at the Challenger in Cali 2014 and in the one in Sao Paulo 2016.
