50 years ago, the longest match in history

In September 1971, a NASL play-off match between the Rochester Lancers and the Dallas Tornado would become legendary. Indeed, this game 1 will simply be the longest game in history.

Americans are used to extended sporting events. Between baseball games that last for a long time, or NBA games whose fourth quarter sometimes lasts as long as the first three together, nothing scares them. And yet, in early September 1971, just 50 years ago, the nerves of the 8,300 fans who had amassed in the aisles of Aquinas Memorial Stadium in Rochester, NY were strained.

Appointment is made at 8 p.m. for the start of the match between the Rochester Lancers and the Dallas Tornado. The Lancers finished first in the Northern Division of the North American Soccer League (NASL), while the Tornado finished second in the Southern. The two teams must therefore face each other in the semi-finals of the play-offs. The rules are clear: the first to win two matches qualifies for the final (the famous Best-Of-3 series). In the event of a draw at the end of the 90 minutes, overtime. And above all, NHL style, no penalties. We continue until one of the two teams scores, like a golden goal, and there is therefore a winner.

The extension begins

At that time, Rochester was clearly the best American team. After winning the American Soccer League in 1969, she joined the NASL and won it in the first year. It is therefore in her capacity as defending champion that the New York franchise begins the play-offs. Opposite, the Dallas Tornado is playing its first play-offs. In the stands, fans are ready, armed with wine and pizza. The Lancers fit perfectly into their match, and opened the scoring in the 18e minute by their striker Manfred Seissler.
