Zverev, ranked fourth, leads 2-0 in direct comparison with number 77 in the world rankings. The first seeded Novak Djokovic was drawn into the same half of the tournament as Olympic champion Zverev, so that the top favorites could meet for the title in the semifinals.

Djokovic initially has to deal with a qualifier. Second round opponent of the Serb would be Jan-Lennard Struff. The Davis Cup professional from Warstein will only play against Tallon Griekspoor from the Netherlands. Djokovic can also win the fourth Grand Slam tournament of the year and become the first player to win the so-called Grand Slam since the Australian Rod Laver in 1969.

Difficult lot for Kohlschreiber

Yannick Hanfmann takes on Alexander Bublik from Kazakhstan, veteran Philipp Kohlschreiber has caught a tough opponent in the former champion Marin Cilic from Croatia. Dominik Koepfer plays against a qualifier in the first round and would then meet the two seeded Russian Daniil Medvedev.

Like Stefanos Tsitsipas, the Russian is in the second half of the tournament and can meet Zverev in the final at the earliest. The recently strong Medvedev will meet Richard Gasquet from France in round one. Meanwhile, Tsitsipas did not have an easy lot, who will meet Andy Murray at the beginning. The Greek are undoubtedly favorites but on a good day the former world number one from Scotland can still be a stumbling block.

Solvable task for Kerber

For the German women, only the former US Open winner Angelique Kerber and Andrea Petkovic are in the main field. Kerber’s first-round opponent is Dajana Jastremska from Ukraine, Petkovic meets Romanian Irina Camelia-Begu. The US Open begins next Monday in Flushing Meadows.
