The Cowboys may have a chance to improve the team’s backup quarterback situation after the 49ers fired Josh Rosen. Garrett Gilbert is the favorite to become the first substitute due to the inconsistency shown by Ben DiNucci early in the preseason.
Rosen’s career has yet to take off, despite being selected 10th in the 2018 draft, having shone at the college level at UCLA. Rosen could be signed by any team on a list of fired players, so the Cowboys could sign him before he became a free agent. The other option for Rosen is that no team hires him before being a free agent and the Cowboys could offer him a new contract. “Rosen threw for 2,278 yards, 14 interceptions and 11 touchdown passes. In 14 games during his rookie year in 2018 he completed 55.2% of his passes.
Rosen has played for the Cardinals, Dolphins, Buccaneers and 49ers in his first three NFL seasons.
If Rosen joins another team, it would be the fifth in four seasons for the quarterback. The Cardinals selected Rosen in 10th place in the 2018 draft, but chose to dispense with his services after just 13 games as a starter. Arizona had the first pick in the 2019 draft and gave the reins of the team to Kyler Murray, under the guidance of coach Kliff Kingsbury, in his first year with the team.
Shortly after selecting Murray, the Cardinals traded Rosen to the Dolphins. The quarterback played in six games, but the Dolphins also chose to dispense with his services by selecting Tua Tagovailoa in 2020. Rosen ended up on the Buccaneers practice squad, where he was hired by the 49ers to join the team’s main roster last December. Prior to the draft, McCarthy had said the Cowboys wanted to add a quarterback during the offseason, but the team decided not to make any major hires.
